New UN Report: The World Has Entered an Era of Global Water Bankruptcy
A major new report from the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) warns that humanity is now living beyond its hydrological means. Rivers, lakes, aquifers and wetlands across the world have been depleted or damaged to the point that many may never recover.
The report describes this as “global water bankruptcy”, a step beyond water stress or water crisis. It highlights growing risks to drinking water supplies, food production, ecosystems and public health unless long-term, preventative water management becomes the priority rather than short-term crisis response.
